If you’re looking for a great way to celebrate Italian heritage, enjoy friendly competition, and spend a summer Saturday with family and friends, mark your calendar for the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival’s Bocce Ball Tournament on Saturday, August 22nd, 2026.

Hosted at the Ferguson Memorial Park Bocce Court in Shinnston, West Virginia, the tournament kicks off at 9:00 a.m. and welcomes players of all skill levels to participate in one of Italy’s most beloved traditions.

Bocce has long been a staple of Italian culture, bringing generations together for laughter, strategy, and friendly competition. Whether you’re a seasoned player or picking up a bocce ball for the first time, this tournament offers a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the game.

Teams will consist of four players, and the entry fee is $25 per player. Better yet, food and drinks will be provided, making it easy to spend the day enjoying great company both on and off the court. Competition will be fierce as teams battle for bragging rights and exciting rewards.

First-place teams receive ribbons and will be featured in the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival Parade. First and second-place teams will also share prize money.

Betty Waddy, chairman of the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival said she is looking forward to kicking off this year’s festival with this event.

“This event kicks off the 2026 Italian Heritage Festival,” she said. “This tournament is followed by our annual pasta cook-off leading up to the main event. It has been a longstanding event for years throughout the festival and I look forward to seeing people come out and enjoy the competition.”

Waddy said the event’s long-running success is a testament to the loyal participants who return year after year.

“We appreciate our dedicated participants who have taken part in this event for years,” she said. “Without their support, we couldn’t make this event a success.”

Anyone interested in participating has until 9:00 a.m. the morning of to officially register their team, Waddy said.
